What is a forward deployed engineer?

A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works inside a customer's business to connect AI to the systems, data, and workflows that business already runs on. FDEs design, build, and ship working solutions to production, then feed what they learn back into the product.

Also known as: FDE, forward deployed AI engineer, forward deployed engineering, FDEs

What is a forward deployed engineer?

Palantir coined the term, borrowing the military idea of people stationed close to the action. A forward deployed engineer sits with the customer's teams, learns how the business runs, and builds the solution inside the customer's own systems.

The role blends three jobs. FDEs embed with the customer to map how work gets done, write production code to solve the problem in front of them, and bring what they learn back so the product improves for everyone.

What does a forward deployed engineer do?

Most FDE work follows the same path, from a business problem to a tool people use.

  1. Integrate. Connect AI to the tools, data, APIs, and platforms the business already uses.
  2. Orchestrate. Coordinate models, services, and automations so they work together on a business outcome.
  3. Design the workflow. Build processes that put AI into real work, with people reviewing the decisions that matter.
  4. Deploy and support. Ship to production, monitor it, and keep improving it so it stays reliable.

What is an example of a forward deployed engineer's work?

Example

A weekly performance report that writes itself

A marketing team spends every Monday pulling numbers from six platforms into a slide. An FDE connects those platforms to one governed data foundation, agrees the KPI definitions with the team, and builds an automation that drafts the report.

The FDE then wraps it in a simple tool the team opens each week, with a review step before anything is sent. The team's Monday goes to the decisions in the report.

Why is the forward deployed engineer role growing?

Companies have plenty of AI demos. What they need is AI working in production, inside the systems and processes they already have. That takes someone who understands both the technology and the business.

  • Adoption is moving to scale. More companies are funding AI across whole teams, beyond a single pilot.
  • Value comes from production. A prototype that never ships doesn't change the business.
  • Existing systems need integration. AI has to work with the data, tools, and platforms already in place.
  • Workflows have to change. Processes, data, and teams need to evolve together around AI.
How Alli does this

How does Alli do this?

PMG's Forward Deployed Engineering team builds with Alli for clients. Alli Data connects a client's platforms and first-party systems into one governed foundation, and Semantic Layer encodes their business logic once, so every automation and agent works from the same numbers.

Engineers build and harden automations in Alli4u, the enterprise AI workspace with a secure coding assistant and a shared library of skills. Alli Apps then turns that work into governed tools the client's teams open and run themselves, with review on every deploy and an audit trail on every run.

Forward deployed engineer FAQ

What does FDE stand for?

FDE stands for forward deployed engineer. The title is also written as forward deployed AI engineer when the work centers on AI, and the practice is called forward deployed engineering.

Who coined the term forward deployed engineer?

Palantir coined it, borrowing the military idea of people stationed close to the action. The role has since spread to AI companies and service firms that build inside their customers' systems.

Is a forward deployed engineer a consultant?

No. A consultant usually recommends a plan and moves on. An FDE stays with the customer, writes production code in their systems, and supports what they ship.

What skills does a forward deployed engineer need?

Software engineering, data engineering, and applied AI, plus the human side: listening, clear writing, comfort with ambiguity, and enough business sense to tie the work to a measurable outcome.
