What is AI workflow design?
Adding AI to a process works best when someone designs the whole flow: what comes in, what each step does, where AI helps, and where a person decides. Without that design, AI ends up bolted onto the side of work that doesn't change.
How do you design an AI workflow?
- Map the process. Write down each step as it happens today, and who does it.
- Choose the trigger. Decide whether it runs on a schedule, from a webhook call, or when a person starts it.
- Assign the steps. Give AI the gathering, drafting, and checking, and keep judgment calls with people.
- Add the review. Show the evidence and a recommendation at each decision point.
- Deliver the result. Send it where people work, or wrap it in an app.
What is an example of AI workflow design?
A weekly report draft
Every Monday at 7 a.m., a workflow downloads last week's performance, pulls relevant industry news, and drafts a report. An analyst reviews and edits the draft before it goes to leadership. The analyst's time goes to the commentary.
AI workflow vs. traditional automation vs. ad hoc AI use
| Traditional automation | Ad hoc AI use | Designed AI workflow | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Handles judgment | No, fixed rules only | Yes, one request at a time | Yes, within defined steps |
| Repeatable | Yes | No | Yes |
| Human review | Rarely built in | Up to each person | Built in at decision points |
Why does AI workflow design matter?
Processes, data, and teams need to change together for AI to pay off. Designing the workflow is how a team decides what AI does, what people do, and how the result reaches the people who act on it.
How does Alli do this?
Alli Generative Workflows, part of Alli by PMG, chains tasks like downloading data, calling web services, and generating AI responses into automations that run on a schedule, from a webhook call, or on demand. Each run is logged, and versions are kept as the workflow changes.
Alli Apps wraps a workflow in an interface so people run it themselves, and Alli4u is where engineers build and harden the skills a workflow uses.

What is an AI workflow?
A repeatable process in which AI handles some steps, like gathering data, drafting, or checking, and people review the decisions that matter.
How do AI workflows start?
Usually on a schedule, from an event such as a webhook call, or when a person starts them on demand.
Where should people stay in an AI workflow?
At the decisions: approving spend, publishing content, or changing a campaign. AI can prepare the evidence and a recommendation.
What is the difference between an AI workflow and an agent?
A workflow follows defined steps in a set order. An agent decides its own steps toward a goal. Many workflows use agents for individual steps.
