What is answer engine optimization?
AEO is named for the answer engine: anything that responds with an answer rather than a list of links, such as a featured answer in search, a voice assistant, or an AI assistant.
AEO started with featured snippets and voice search, where only one answer gets read out or shown. It has become more important as AI tools summarize the web into a single response.
How does answer engine optimization work?
Answer engines look for passages that answer a question cleanly and can stand on their own. AEO makes those passages easy to find and easy to quote.
| Technique | What it means | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Question-led headings | Use the question people actually ask as the heading | Matches the query to the passage |
| Answer first | Answer in the first two or three sentences under the heading | Gives engines a quotable, self-contained answer |
| Structured formats | Use lists, steps, and tables where they fit | Makes comparisons and processes easy to extract |
| Structured data | Add schema such as FAQPage and DefinedTerm | Tells engines what each part of the page is |
| Clear entities | Name products, people, and concepts consistently | Helps engines connect your page to the right topic |
What is an example of answer engine optimization?
One question, one clear answer
A brand's help article explains a return policy in a long paragraph halfway down the page. When people ask an assistant how returns work, the answer comes from a forum thread instead.
The team rewrites the page with the heading "How do I return an item?", answers it in two sentences, lists the steps, and adds FAQ markup. Now the brand's own answer has a far better chance of being the one engines quote.
AEO vs. SEO
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Target | A ranking position on a results page | The single answer shown, read aloud, or summarized |
| Typical query | Keywords and topics | Full questions |
| Content shape | Comprehensive pages | Comprehensive pages with quotable answers inside them |
| Success signal | Rankings and clicks | Being quoted or cited as the answer |
| Relationship | The foundation | Builds on SEO and feeds GEO |
Why does answer engine optimization matter?
When an engine shows one answer, there is no second place. More searches now end with an answer on the page, and more questions go to AI assistants, so being the quoted source matters more than it used to.
- Visibility without a click. Your brand can be the answer even when the searcher doesn't visit a page.
- Accuracy about your brand. If your page isn't the clearest answer, someone else's description of you may be used instead.
- Better pages for people. Clear questions and direct answers also make pages easier for humans to read.
How does Alli do this?
AEO is part of PMG's core service offering. PMG's teams, and its Forward Deployed Engineering team, structure brands' content so answer engines can find it, lift it, and cite it as the answer.
Alli Brand Equity shows whether it's working: Share of LLM Presence tracks how a range of AI models describe, rank, and recommend your brand against competitors, and share of search tracks how search interest in your brand trends. Both sit in a weekly brand equity score, so teams can see whether the brand is gaining ground where answers are formed.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
They overlap. AEO focuses on structuring pages so engines can lift a direct answer. GEO is broader: shaping how AI models find, trust, describe, and cite a brand across many sources, not only your own pages.
Is AEO different from SEO?
AEO builds on SEO. SEO aims to rank a page. AEO aims to have a passage from that page used as the answer. Most AEO practices also help SEO.
What is an answer engine?
Any tool that responds to a question with an answer instead of a list of links, such as a featured answer in search, a voice assistant, or an AI assistant.
Does structured data help AEO?
It helps engines understand what a page contains, such as questions and answers or definitions. It supports clear content, but it doesn't replace it.
