What is an AI visibility score?
A single AI answer tells you very little. Answers vary from one run to the next and from one model to another, so the score rolls many of them into one trend a team can watch.
There's no single industry formula. Different tools weigh mentions, rank, sentiment, and citations differently, so the method matters as much as the number.
How is an AI visibility score measured?
- Define the competitive set. Choose the brands you're really competing with. The score is relative to them.
- Choose the questions. Use the questions buyers ask in the category, not just your brand name.
- Ask several AI models, repeatedly. Answers vary between runs and models, so sample them over time.
- Score each answer. Record whether the brand appears, where it ranks, and how it's described.
- Roll up and trend. Combine the results into a score and watch how it moves week to week.
What is an example of an AI visibility score in use?
A slipping score with a clear cause
A consumer brand's AI visibility score drops over two months while its share of search holds steady. Reading the answers shows AI models now recommend a competitor that launched a well-reviewed product.
The team sees the shift before it shows up in sales and adjusts its messaging and product content to respond.
AI visibility score vs. share of search vs. share of voice
| Share of voice | Share of search | AI visibility score | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it measures | Share of advertising or conversation | Share of branded search volume | Presence, rank, and description in AI answers |
| Source | Media and social data | Search data | Answers from AI models |
| What it reflects | How loudly the brand speaks | How actively people seek the brand | How AI represents the brand |
| Best used | Alongside the others | Alongside the others | Alongside the others |
Why does an AI visibility score matter?
People increasingly ask AI assistants which brands to consider. A brand's position in those answers is a new, measurable part of brand strength, and it can move without any change in a brand's own marketing.
- Early warning. AI visibility can slip before sales do.
- Competitive context. It shows who AI recommends instead of you, and why.
- Evidence for AI search work. It shows whether GEO and content work is changing outcomes.
How does Alli do this?
Alli by PMG's Brand Equity's version of this metric is Share of LLM Presence. It measures how a range of AI models describe, rank, and recommend your brand compared with your competitors, and how that changes over time, against a competitive set defined at onboarding.
Like every Brand Equity signal, it's indexed from 0 to 100, tracked against both the competitive set and your own history, and weighted into a weekly brand equity score by how well it predicts your primary business KPI.

Is there a standard AI visibility score?
No. Tools use different questions, models, and scoring methods, so scores from different providers aren't directly comparable. Compare a brand against its own trend and competitors using one consistent method.
Why do AI answers change from run to run?
AI models generate answers rather than retrieving fixed results, so wording and recommendations can vary. That's why visibility should be sampled repeatedly and tracked as a trend.
How is an AI visibility score different from Share of LLM Presence?
Share of LLM Presence is Alli Brand Equity's signal for AI visibility: how AI models describe, rank, and recommend a brand against its competitive set over time.
How can a brand improve its AI visibility?
By publishing clear, accurate content that answers buyers' questions, keeping facts consistent across trusted sources, and building the brand demand that AI models reflect.
