What is generative engine optimization?
The name comes from the tools it targets. A "generative engine" is any tool that writes an answer instead of returning a list of links: AI assistants, chatbots, and AI-generated summaries in search.
The term took hold as people began asking AI assistants which products to buy, which services to trust, and how to solve problems. When the answer is a written paragraph, there's no page two. A brand is either part of the answer, described accurately, or it isn't.
How does generative engine optimization work?
AI models build answers from what they learned in training and, increasingly, from sources they retrieve at the moment of the question. GEO works on both: making sure accurate information about a brand exists in the places models learn from, and making individual pages easy to retrieve, understand, and quote.
- Measure the starting point. Ask AI models the questions buyers ask in your category, and record whether your brand appears, where it ranks, and how it's described.
- Answer questions directly. Write pages that state the answer in the first sentences under a clear question heading, so a model can quote them on their own.
- Make facts easy to verify. Use specific, consistent facts, structured data, and clear entity names, so models can match what you say with other sources.
- Earn mentions elsewhere. Models weigh what reviews, press, reference sites, and communities say about a brand, not only what its own site says.
- Track the change. Re-run the same questions over time to see whether visibility and descriptions improve.
What is an example of generative engine optimization?
From missing to mentioned
A software brand ranks well in search for its category, but when people ask an AI assistant to recommend options, it rarely comes up, and when it does, the description is two years out of date.
The team rewrites its product pages around the questions buyers ask, adds clear definitions and comparison tables, corrects outdated facts on reference sites, and tracks AI answers monthly. Over time, the brand appears in more answers, with a current description.
GEO vs. SEO vs. AEO
The three overlap heavily, and most of the work supports all of them. The difference is where the result shows up.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages in search results | Be the direct answer to a question | Be cited and described well in AI-generated answers |
| Where it shows up | Search results pages | Featured answers, voice assistants, answer boxes | AI assistants and AI summaries in search |
| Unit of success | A ranking and a click | A quoted answer | A mention, a recommendation, or a citation |
| Main levers | Relevance, links, technical health | Question-led structure, concise answers, structured data | Clear facts, consistent entities, third-party mentions |
| How it's measured | Rankings, traffic | Answer placements | Presence, rank, and description in AI answers |
Why does generative engine optimization matter?
More product research now starts with a question to an AI assistant. Those answers shape shortlists before a buyer ever reaches a search results page or a brand's website.
- Consideration forms earlier. If a brand isn't in the AI answer, it may never make the shortlist.
- Descriptions stick. An outdated or inaccurate AI description can shape perception at scale.
- Competitors move first. AI answers are relative. When a competitor is cited more, your brand is cited less.
- It compounds with brand strength. Brands that people already search for, review, and discuss tend to show up more in AI answers.
How does Alli do this?
GEO is part of PMG's core service offering. PMG's teams, and its Forward Deployed Engineering team, plan and run GEO programs for brands: shaping content and brand signals so AI models find, trust, and cite them.
Alli measures whether that work is paying off. Share of LLM Presence, one of the signals in Alli Brand Equity, tracks how a range of AI models describe, rank, and recommend your brand compared with your competitors, week by week, alongside share of search, sentiment, and direct traffic, so GEO progress is read against the rest of the brand.

What does GEO stand for in marketing?
GEO stands for generative engine optimization: shaping content and brand signals so AI models find, trust, and cite a brand in the answers they generate.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. GEO builds on SEO. Many AI tools retrieve search results when they answer, so strong SEO still matters. GEO adds a focus on being quoted and described well, not just ranked.
How do you measure generative engine optimization?
By asking AI models the questions buyers ask in a category, repeatedly and over time, and tracking whether a brand appears, how it ranks against competitors, and how it's described.
What content works best for GEO?
Content that answers a specific question directly, uses clear and consistent facts, is well structured with headings, lists, and tables, and is backed up by what other trusted sources say.
Does Alli do generative engine optimization?
PMG's teams, and its Forward Deployed Engineering team, plan and run GEO programs, and Alli measures the results. Alli Brand Equity includes Share of LLM Presence, which tracks how AI models describe, rank, and recommend a brand against its competitors.
