The challenge: Launch a new product in a crowded category by building on how fans already used the brand.
- 3x sales vs. forecast. SquishPillow sold through at three times the initial launch forecast.
- Sold out before launch day. The 2,500-unit Target pre-order was gone within days.
- Built on fan behavior. Fans were already sleeping on their Squishmallows, so Jazwares made the pillow they were asking for.
- Creative tested in flight. Alli Creative Insights showed the concept, not the color palette, was driving results.
- “We met our audience in moments that mattered to them and translated that connection into momentum for the business.”Laura Christy, Jazwares
Turning fandom into a lifestyle product
Squishmallows fans had already found a new use for the brand. Across TikTok and other social platforms, they were sleeping on their plush every night, wearing dents into them. Jazwares' own research backed it up: a large share of pillow buyers had already slept on a Squishmallow.
That insight became SquishPillow. But the pillow category was a tough place to launch. Most brands compete on the same functional claims about support and sleep science, and shoppers rarely buy a pillow by brand name.
Jazwares wanted more than a licensed pillow on a shelf. The goal was to extend Squishmallows from a plush toy into a lifestyle product that people asked for by name. Success would be measured by cultural relevance, speed to sell-through, and early retail results during the Back-to-School window.
Making comfort a cultural statement
PMG built the launch on a cultural insight instead of a product claim. Competitors talked about ergonomics. Gen Z talked about comfort as part of who they are, from cozy room aesthetics to bedrotting. So SquishPillow was positioned as a feeling to live in, not a pillow to buy.
Alli Audience Planner turned that broad cozy-comfort trend into defined audiences, so the team knew who the moment belonged to and what would move them. The whole category could see the trend. The difference was acting on it with a clear read of the audience.
The plan ran in two movements. First, an influencer push with GlowHouse built hype and pre-orders. Then the For Your Sleepy Head paid campaign and #SquishTok creator content extended that momentum through Back-to-School, with media investment timed to the season. PMG's studio led the paid creative, and its influencer team produced the creator content, so both ran on one platform with different executions.
Creating a dreamworld across every screen
PMG shot the paid campaign at a home in North Texas using vintage Lomography Petzvalux lenses. The result was a hazy, dreamlike look that sits somewhere between sleep and waking. Those films ran across TikTok, YouTube, Meta, Snapchat, and digital out-of-home placements near key retail partners.
Alli Creative Insights tested the creative against real-time performance. When two lower-performing ads turned out to share a color scheme, the team made new versions in the top-performing palette Alli had identified. The results showed the concept, not the color, was driving performance, so spend stayed behind the ideas that were working. Ask Alli gave the team a quick way to check live results and shift budget toward what was picking up speed.
On social, PMG secured premier placement with GlowHouse as the launch's cultural flashpoint. #SquishTok then followed students through the back-to-college season, from shopping to dorm move-in, with the strongest content amplified across platforms.
Turning comfort into commercial momentum
The launch hit its Back-to-School scale and engagement targets, with 213 million impressions, 867,000 engagements, and 263,000 link clicks.
Demand turned into sales right away. The 2,500-unit Target pre-order sold out within days, and SquishPillow sold through at three times the initial forecast, leading to an early retail sell-out.
We met our audience in moments that mattered to them and translated that connection into momentum for the business.
The momentum kept going after launch. The @squishpillowofficial TikTok account grew from zero to thousands of followers within weeks. For Jazwares, the launch showed how a brand extension built on real fan behavior can turn fandom into measurable business results.
