What is audience segmentation?

Audience segmentation is the practice of dividing a market or customer base into groups that share traits, behaviors, or needs, such as demographics, interests, purchase habits, or life stage. Each segment can then get messaging, creative, and media built for it, instead of one plan for everyone.

Also known as: market segmentation, customer segmentation

What is audience segmentation?

Dividing people up is the easy part. Almost any audience can be split a dozen ways. The harder part is choosing splits that change what the team actually does.

Good segments are distinct, large enough to matter, reachable through real channels, and different enough that they need a different approach. If two segments would get the same message and media, they're one segment.

What are the main types of audience segmentation?

TypeBased onExample segment
DemographicAge, income, education, householdParents of young children
GeographicCountry, region, city, climateUrban shoppers in the Northeast
PsychographicValues, interests, lifestyleSustainability-minded early adopters
BehavioralPurchases, usage, engagementLapsed customers who bought twice last year
Firmographic (B2B)Industry, company size, job roleIT decision-makers at mid-size firms

Most strong segments combine several types, such as a behavior plus an interest plus where the audience spends its time.

What is an example of audience segmentation?

Example

One product, two audiences

A fitness brand sells the same running shoe to two segments: competitive runners who care about performance data, and casual walkers who care about comfort.

The runners see technical creative on running communities and video. The walkers see comfort-led creative on social and streaming. Each message lands better than one generic campaign would.

Audience segments vs. personas

Why does audience segmentation matter?

People respond to messages that speak to their needs, in the places they actually spend time. Segmentation lets a team concentrate budget on the audiences most likely to respond and tailor the experience to each.

  • More relevant messaging. Creative speaks to each group's real priorities.
  • More efficient media. Spend goes where each segment actually is.
  • Better decisions. Teams can see which segments grow, shrink, or shift.
  • Keep it current. Consumer behavior changes quickly, so segments built once and left alone drift from reality.
How Alli does this

How does Alli do this?

Alli by PMG's Audience Planner moves teams from static segments to Live Personas. It builds detailed, customizable personas from billions of behaviors across streaming, social, commerce, creators, and professional networks, combined with a brand's first-party insights, and keeps them current as behavior shifts.

Teams compare estimated reach across platforms, talk to a published persona through Ask Alli to test ideas before spending, and carry personas straight into Alli Media Planner and Alli Creative Studio, so every team plans from the same audience.

Audience segmentation FAQ

What are the four main types of audience segmentation?

Demographic, geographic, psychographic, and behavioral. B2B teams often add firmographic segmentation, based on industry, company size, and role.

What is the difference between segmentation and targeting?

Segmentation divides an audience into groups. Targeting decides which of those groups to focus on and how to reach them.

What is the difference between a segment and a persona?

A segment is a group defined by shared attributes. A persona is a detailed profile that brings a segment to life, describing needs, behaviors, and motivations.

How often should audience segments be updated?

Regularly. Consumer behavior, platforms, and culture shift quickly, so segments built from current behavior stay more accurate than ones refreshed once a year.
